Released back in May of this year, Apex Legends Mobile is a direct port of its console and PC counterpart, and is an impressive one at that. Featuring a whole host of different controller options and graphical settings, Apex Legends Mobile works surprisingly well on mobile devices and comes extremely close to capturing the same gameplay feeling as its bigger brother. Respawn is also seemingly dedicating quite a lot of resources to Apex Legends Mobile, as it’s receiving a constant stream of updates, the latest of which added the infamous Legend Crypto to the game. But thankfully, he’s not quite as redundant as his console iteration.

How Apex Legends’ Crypto Is Different In The Mobile Version

Crypto is by far the weakest Legend in Apex Legends right now, and has been since his introduction all the way back in Season 4. With a Tactical ability that requires the player to remotely control a drone, leaving themselves wide open to attacks, and an Ultimate that’ll often harm the player just as much as their target, Crypto is a fairly redundant scout. Simply put, when Bloodhound exists, with glaringly better abilities all-round, there’s just no reason to pick Crypto. At least, not in the regular version of Apex Legends.

However, when it comes to the mobile version of Apex Legends, Crypto may end up being a worthy teammate after all. While Crypto’s abilities all remain the same, the mobile version of the character does have a few extra tricks up his sleeve. First off, Crypto’s weaknesses are still definitely present in Apex Legends Mobile. The Surveillance Drone Tactical ability still requires the player to stop what they’re doing and manually control the drone, and the Drone EMP Ultimate can still knock back and slow teammates if they’re caught within its vicinity. But the big change to Crypto in Apex Legends Mobile is that his drone can now follow him automatically for limited periods of time, all the while marking any enemies in the area.

Naturally, this change drastically affects how Crypto plays. Though players can still use the drone manually, the ability to have it scan the area and follow Crypto automatically finally makes Crypto a valuable team asset, being nearly comparable to Bloodhound’s main Tactical ability. On top of this, Crypto also has a number of Perks, a system which is unique to Apex Legends Mobile. As players continue to use a Legend, they’ll gain more experience, which then levels up the character and unlocks a series of Perks. These Perks can drastically improve a Legend’s core abilities.

When it comes to general Perks, Crypto has six to unlock. The first of these, “Self Destruct,” allows Crypto’s drone to explode, which damages any enemies in the way. “Hidden User” makes Crypto appear semi-transparent when manually controlling drones, which is a neat incentive to actually use his Tactical for once. “System Scan” allows the drone to reveal the enemy’s health and armor level. “Lag Bomb” gives the drone the ability to launch an EMP bomb. “Shut Down” gives Crypto’s Ultimate physical damage, as opposed to just shield. And the final Perk, “Salvage Operation,” grants Crypto’s drones the ability to retrieve items for the player. These changes go a long way in making Crypto feel like a viable Legend for once.
